Symbolism

The Bodhi Tree was a large and very old sacred fig tree in Bodh Gaya, India under which Siddhartha Gautama, the spiritual teacher who later became known as the Buddha, is said to have attained enlightenment. In religious iconography, the Bodhi Tree is recognizable by its heart-shaped leaves, which are usually prominently displayed.

Meet the Artisans

MATR BOOMIE - (mä-ter boo-miē "Motherland" in Hindi) is a fair trade collection from India that marries modern design sensibility with inspiring traditional art forms, bringing people and cultures closer together. With the mission of creating opportunities for women and minorities to realize their creative, economic and leadership potential. They have grown to empower 20,000 artisans in 40 partner communities throughout India.

Jewelry Making

Ornate jewelry is a proud cultural tradition in India and every piece in Matr Boomie's collection hints at a deeper story. In the sprawling urban center of Old Delhi, their partner group of nearly 80 artisans delicately bends, etches, beads, and polishes jewelry from stones, glass, upcycled metal and wires, seeds, and other materials. However, these artisans are not only limited to jewelry. Many of them go on to create other products such as frames, ornaments, and hair accessories made out of ethically-sourced bone. They inherit their craftsmanship from their ancestors, who were master jewelers.
